The Carpenter Conundrum

Cameron

As contractors, our days are filled with blueprints, building materials, and plans that can change on the fly. One challenge that has been noted is a shortage of skilled all-around carpenters. It's an issue that has crept up in the industry over the last few decades. This can create gaps in the workforce and slow down projects. Why is this happening and what we can do about it?

The truth of the matter is that many talented skilled tradesmen are retiring. These are the folks who could eyeball a board and tell you it’s length, whose hands seem to have built half the town, and whose experience leaves behind a void.

At the same time, fewer people are entering the trades. For years, society has pushed college degrees as the primary path to success, often overlooking the trades entirely. Shop classes have disappeared from many schools, and apprenticeship opportunities aren’t as visible as they once were. As a result, we’re seeing fewer hands ready to pick up a hammer and learn the craft.

Carpentry is more than just cutting wood and driving nails. It’s an art, a science. A skilled carpenter can make or break a project. Their precision, problem-solving skills and ability to craft are the heartbeat of what we do.

Without skilled carpenters, projects can take longer, costs go up, and quality can suffer. We take pride in delivering work that stands the test of time, and that’s harder to achieve without the right people.

The challenge of finding skilled carpenters has been real, but it’s not insurmountable. With a little creativity and a lot of effort, we can ensure the legacy of craftsmanship continues.
